Bayside Vehicle Restorers Annual Ormiston Car Rally with
Australia Day BBQ shed lunch at Mike's

This particular Car Rally has been hosted by the Bayside Vehicle Restorers Club for many years and usually attracts 500+ vintage and classic cars.  Today was no exception with a very strong turn-out that completely filled the main school oval.  I'd like to thank the club committee and volunteers who all worked in high temperatures and crushing humidity to ensure we all enjoyed our day.

The usual process for rally participants is to arrive early, enjoy the complementary breakfast, browse the hundreds of different vehicles on display, choose from one of three rally routes then depart on your chosen rally after 10am.  We certainly enjoyed the first half on the morning but had our own plans from 10.  This time the 14 Corvettes were in a position to depart early, having been parked closest the main gates and around 9:50 we fired-up for a short drive to Alexandra Hills for our own Australia Day BBQ and shed afternoon.

Club member Mike opened his shed to the group and we quickly discovered his refrigerator full of cool drinks and settled in the for afternoon.  One enterprising member soon stripped off to enjoy a swim (thank goodness Jim had his board shorts on) while the rest of us watched as Mike and Bryan wrestled the mighty C7 onto the hoist.  It was amazing to see the underside of this beautiful machine and while the shiny side is certainly pretty, there's a certain mechanical beauty to be found underneath this modern supercar.

With lots of ooh's and arh's we looked at brake ventilation, rear oil pumps for the engine & transmission, exotic construction materials and those enormous half shafts.  The plan was to check out a few different Corvette models but the unrelenting heat, 37 degrees in the shade of the shed made the work too difficult so we simply spent time catching up and enjoying one-another's company.

Special thanks to Mike for opening his shed, Jim for looking after the BBQ and for everyone who participated in the event this year.  Certainly a rewarding day and a great way to spend Australia Day.
